CORFU. The residents of south Corfu have had no rest today as they attempt, in any way they can, to repair the damage done by last night’s thunderstorm.
The storm, which cost the life of a 57-year-old man, did serious damage to electricity, water and telephone networks. Repair crews and local residents are working together, in an effort to repair the damage as best they can. In Marathia, a large block of asphalt came away from the road, causing subsidence and damage to a large water pipe.
Damage to the electricity network was also widespread, with several trees falling – even being uprooted – and destroying the cables. There are several buildings where the roof has been blown off and windows broken. Four crews from the electricity company are working in the area, however there will be some areas where the electricity and water supply still won’t be restored tonight.
The Fire Service is also working in the area cutting up fallen trees and pumping the water out of flooded areas.
