Water, water everywhere….again!

rain

CORFU.It’s like a repeat performance every time it rains in the Spilia district. From the Jewish Quarter to Palaiologou and Solomou St, the storm drains overflow and the unfortunate residents or passers-by have to try and avoid sewage - not clean water.

In Palaiologou St., with its tourist shops and jewellers, residents and businesspeople are completely exasperated. The flagstones are slippery with water and there are pools of water everywhere. Wellington boots are needed for sure!

No tourists in sight

Three cruise ships were in Corfu port yesterday, but because of the bad weather the tourist streets were empty and some of the shop owners didn’t even open their shops or were forced to close early just as they always have to do when it gets like this.

Ms. Koursaris, a long-time owner of a jewellery shop in the area, spoke to a reporter from Enimerosi and said that the drains are blocked and sometimes because of the sewage the smell is intolerable. Everyone knows the situation but after so many years, still nothing has been done.

While we were in the area, a family of tourists were forced to walk through the fast-flowing stream of water in the street.

There are hardly any runoffs in the street, so as a result the water forms in pools. Any runoffs that do exist are blocked or overflowing. All who live or work in the area are completely fed up with this state of affairs every day.
