CORFU.The Region of Ionian Islands and the Ionian University, in collaboration with the Municipality of Corfu organized a discussion meeting on Wednesday in the lecture theatre of the Ionian University. Participating in the meeting were the Administrator for Regional Agricultural Finance, Stamatis Gkinis, the Regional Deputy Governor, Giannis Fontanas, the delegate from Corfu Municipality, Leonidas Pagkratis, representing the Ionian University, Markos Avlonitis and Giannis Karidis, along with students and farmers.

The debate focused mainly on the Xylella bacterium, which has not been detected in Corfu but has infected several trees in Southern Italy. For this reason, meetings like this one are being held in order to take the necessary measures to prevent the bacteria from passing to Corfu. The issue of illegal tree-cutting was also highlighted at the meeting. Regarding the latter, the Region of Ionian Islands has repealed its decision from 2011 and growers can now take action in their olive groves with the advice of an agronomist and at their own risk, followed by the notification of Regional Agricultural Finance Department.

Finally, there was a presentation of the application, OliveAlarm, which has been created by students at the Ionian University, to enable growers to inform the authorities with photos about possible attacks of Xylella and illegal tree-cutting.
