The Landfill Water isn’t Groundwater!

The Landfill Site in South Corfu doesn’t pose any environmental hazards.

his was confirmed by researchers in the Environmental Dept. of the Region of the Ionian Islands, Thalia Lazaridou and Spyridoula Mouzakiti.

Their conclusion was based on the measurements and results of the hydrogeological research they conducted.

The main conclusion is that the groundwater in the area is located at a depth much lower than the bottom of the landfill. The analysis of the water they found showed no evidence of its underground origin. The researchers pointed out that if there were reliable groundwater near the surface, then it could be used for its needs – which is not the case. “If there was satisfactory groundwater, then why did the three drillings we made go to such a depth?” they asked.

In answer to a question that was put to them they ruled out the possibility of an inflow from the groundwater as they are much lower than the landfill drains.

Nikos Triantos, president of the Corfu branch of the Technical Chamber, claimed that the differences between the results of the new study and those of a previous study raised doubts about the conclusions. The researchers responded that the previous study had taken place during the construction of the landfill in an ‘unstable environment’.

“Whatever excavation had been made, lateral water would have entered, so it’s logical that the previous study would have found water during the construction.”
