“Corfu–Peristeres” sailing race on Saturday
CORFU. The open-sea sailing race “Corfu–Peristeres”, organised by the Gouvia Marina Sailing Club, gets underway at 10 am on Saturday, 24 October. The race covers a distance of 18 nautical miles.
The “Corfu–Peristeres” race, which is included in the official racing calendar of the Hellenic Sailing Federation Offshore Sailing Committee, is scheduled to start at 10 am on Saturday. The course is listed in the calendar as “Corfu–Peristeres (Kaparelli)”, covering a total distance of 18 nautical miles, approximately 33 kilometres.
Offshore Sailing Committee
The race is part of the programme of local offshore sailing events that keep competitive sailing active in Corfu after the end of the summer season. Autumn conditions, with changes in wind strength and direction, require crews to choose their course carefully, work together and adapt their handling accordingly.
Sailing Tradition
The Gouvia Marina Sailing Club has a long history of organising offshore races. Its most significant international event is the Brindisi–Corfu Regatta, which began in 1986 and this year marked 40 years since its first edition. It is one of the major sailing events linking the two shores of the Adriatic and Ionian seas.
The Ionian Rally is also part of the region’s wider sailing tradition. It began in its current format in 1989, with routes between the islands and ports of the Ionian.
The Gouvia Marina Sailing Club was founded in August 2007 and is based at the marina. Its aim is to promote sailing in the Ionian and southern Adriatic. It runs sailing schools for beginners, advanced sailors and competitive sailors, combining the training of new sailors with the organisation of races.
Sailing School
Saturday’s race provides another opportunity for local crews to compete at a time when sailing activity continues beyond the tourist season.
