Corfu Museum of Asian Art, as part of its annual educational activities, is offering this year’s programme, “Like Japanese Paper”.

The educational programme “Like Japanese Paper” invites 5th- and 6th-grade primary school pupils to discover traditional Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock printing (“pictures of the floating world”), which flourished during the Edo period (17th–19th centuries).

This art form depicted everyday life and the leisure pursuits of the urban classes. It became accessible to a wider audience through the production of multiple prints, combining high quality with low cost.

Guided by Katsushika Hokusai’s series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, pupils will discover the secrets of this artistic tradition.

During the programme, pupils will:

  • Learn about the society and art of the Edo period.

  • Discover the great Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai and the technique of woodblock printing.

  • Create their own prints using stamps, inspired by the work South Wind, Clear Sky.

The programme combines art history with creativity, offering pupils a unique cultural experience.

Target audience: 5th- and 6th-grade primary school pupils

Duration: 60 minutes

Maximum number of participants: 25 pupils (one school class)
