355 violations of crash helmet law in Ionian Islands last week including 142 in Corfu

CORFU. 355 violations were confirmed in the Ionian Islands in the 12th week of the campaign ‘Zero tolerance for not wearing a helmet’.
(Ionian Islands Regional Police Department) Checks and awareness-raising actions carried out by the Traffic Police, regional Police Departments, and the Road Accident Control and Prevention Teams in Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia, and Lefkada continue, as part of the campaign ‘Zero tolerance for not wearing a helmet,’ with the aim of ensuring full compliance by drivers and passengers of two-wheeled vehicles, as well as users of Light Personal Electric Vehicles.
In the 12th week of the campaign, from September 15 to 21, a total of 951 checks were carried out and 355 violations were confirmed for not using a protective helmet (142 in Corfu, 112 in Zakynthos, 51 in Cephalonia, and 50 in Lefkada).
The above violations concerned 290 drivers (220 on two-wheelers, 24 on quad bikes vehicles, 17 employees in delivery services, 29 on LPEVs) and 65 passengers.
With the enactment of the new Highway Code (Law 5209/2025), the State is sending a clear message of zero tolerance toward not wearing a helmet, through the tightening of penalties, as follows:
• €350 fine and suspension of the driving licence for 30 days for the driver of a two-wheeler (the same penalties also apply to a driver who does not ensure the safety of a passenger).
• €350 fine for the passenger of a two-wheeler.
• €30 fine for the driver of an LPEV.
In cases of repeat offences, the penalties increase significantly.
