CORFU. Despite the deployment of the Port Authority, Police, Decentralised Administration, and Public Property Service, the operation ended unsuccessfully.

On Tuesday morning, April 21, the local community of Messonghi proved that collective will can raise a wall of protection against decisions that threaten their area. From early in the morning, the presence of a large crowd at the jetty acted as a shield, preventing the scheduled demolition.

Despite the deployment of strong forces from the Port Authority and the Police, as well as the Decentralised Administration and the Public Property Service, the operation ended unsuccessfully.

The authorities withdrew once again in the face of the residents’ peaceful but unwavering response, making it clear that the jetty is not simply a concrete structure, but the backbone of the economic and social life of South Corfu.

Its demolition would be a critical blow, leading to economic collapse and weakening local businesses, as stated by the president of the Messonghi Jetty Action Committee, Dimitris Avlianos.

“The presence of the people today was not just a protest; it was the defence of our very home. This battle is not over—now it begins.”

Residents stand united against decisions made without the involvement of the local community.
