CORFU. There were 4,242 police checks in the Ionian Islands last week, with 1,376 driving offences confirmed.

Traffic Police carried out spot checks between 7 and 13 September in Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia and Lefkada.
4,242 vehicles were checked and 1,376 offences were confirmed (620 in Corfu, 347 in Zakynthos, 221 in Lefkada and 188 in Cephalonia), with the appropriate fines being issued.
The violations included:
- 302 for not wearing a helmet
- 168 for speeding
- 46 for driving without a licence
- 34 for driving under the influence
- 30 for not having insurance
- 22 for not using seat belts
- 17 for MOT violations
- 17 for driving on the wrong side of the road
- 5 for using mobile phone while driving
- 4 for noise levels above that permitted
- 4 for dangerous driving
- 1 for running a red light
- 726 other offences
