First Resurrection and smashing of ΄botides΄

CORFU. The Philharmonic Bands, of course took part in the First Resurrection celebrations.
This year, as every year, the traditional custom of smashing 'botides' (clay pots) took place when the First Resurrection was announced.
People had gathered early in Spianada and Liston, and in every alley of the historic centre to watch the spectacle.
The events began with the procession of the Sacred Relics of Saint Spyridon, attended by the local authorities as well as a large crowd of people.
At 11 o’clock, Corfu Town residents threw clay pots filled with water from their balconies. These pots, called 'botides,' are earthenware jugs with a narrow neck and two handles on the sides for carrying. The balconies are decorated, and the residents tie red ribbons around the botides—red being the colour of Corfu.
