CORFU. The annual memorial will take place on Vidos Island on Thursday 26 September.

(CENTRAL CORFU MUNICIPALITY AND DIAPONTIA ISLANDS) The tragic moments of the Serbs' political history, who found safe refuge in Corfu during World War I, come to life again these days in our shared memories, as they do every year without fail.

Our island, which for two years unofficially became the seat of the Serbian Government, has since been characterised as their ‘Island of Salvation.’

On Tuesday morning, a delegation from the Serbian Government and the Municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands laid wreaths at a memorial ceremony at the Serbian Monument in Gouvia, the port where thousands of Serbian soldiers and civilians of all ages landed in January and February 1916.

Following this, in an emotional atmosphere, a ceremony was held at the cemetery of the Holy Theotokos Zoodochos Pigi in Kato Korakiana, paying tribute at one of the many burial sites of Serbs who breathed their last on our island during the period 1916-1918.

The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands was represented by the Deputy Mayor of Education and Sports, Pantelis Yiannoulis, who spoke warmly about the unbreakable bonds of friendship between our peoples, which have remained unchanged over time and are a lasting symbol of humanity and solidarity.

On Thursday, 26/9, the annual memorial ceremony will take place on the island of Vidos, where in 1936 the magnificent Serbian Mausoleum-Ossuary was erected.
