NEW YORK. Members of the Ionian Islands Diaspora in the USA sent a letter to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, requesting him to intervene in the provision of basic medical care in Mathraki.

The letter

Honourable Prime Minister of Greece,

The US Ionian Cultural Federation would like to express its concern and at the same time request your intervention to find a solution to a major problem for our beloved island, Corfu, and specifically Mathraki in the Diapontia Islands, North West Corfu. Our request is for the immediate provision of a doctor for the island.

The permanent residents on Mathraki are upset because of the sudden removal of the doctor that used to cover their needs. As a result, they now face serious problems of basic medical care. Given that it is extremely dangerous for the island to remain without a doctor, it is critical that this issue be dealt with immediately with the appointment of necessary medical staff. Especially when there is a sailing prohibition order, the absence of a doctor could even prove fatal in emergency cases.

As Greek Diaspora Corfiots, we are concerned about our homeland and we believe that the state is obliged to assist the residents of these places and to contribute by any means available to the improvement in their quality of life.

We are confident that you will understand this huge problem that exists in Mathraki , and hope that you will take steps to find an immediate solution to this problem.

Sincerely,

President of Ionian Cultural Federation of the USA

Nikolaos Bardis
