Impressive turnout for the 24th Panhellenic Volunteer Blood Donors Torch Relay
CORFU. A huge ‘Chain of Solidarity for Life’ filled Spianada Square, sending a powerful message of hope, giving and social awareness.
The arrival of the “Flame of Love” in Corfu on Thursday, 1 October, was marked by great ceremony, enthusiasm and a moving response from the local community, as part of the 24th Panhellenic Torch Relay of Volunteer Blood Donors.

The event, co-organised by the Panhellenic Federation of Voluntary Blood Donors’ Associations (POSEA), the “Pandotis” Association and the Ionian Islands Regional Education Department, developed into a true celebration of altruism and solidarity.
The event began at the Blood Donation Department of Corfu General Hospital with the symbolic lighting of the flame, which was proudly and enthusiastically carried by athletes from the island. The event reached its climax in Upper Square (Spianada), where hundreds of primary and secondary school pupils — with a strong presence from the fifth and sixth grades of primary schools, as well as children from the “Melissa” Day Care Centre — responded in large numbers to the call from “Pandotis”.

Holding hands, the pupils formed a ring around the square for ten minutes, creating an impressive and moving “Chain of Solidarity for Life”. The 'Old' Philharmonic Band added its own distinctive touch to the event, performing and providing the musical accompaniment, while large numbers of local residents and visitors to the island embraced the initiative with warm applause.

It was a remarkable initiative that fully achieved its aim: to raise awareness among people of all ages and convey the essential message that blood is a vital resource, and that donating it voluntarily is the ultimate act of social responsibility, civic consciousness and love for our fellow human beings.
A huge “Chain of Solidarity for Life” embraced Spianada Square, sending a powerful message of hope, giving and social awareness.
