Othoni: New defibrillator donated as memorial service held for fallen sailors
CORFU. Two important events: saving lives and honouring the fallen.
Two separate but equally important events recently took place on the island of Othoni, highlighting both the spirit of social solidarity and the preservation of historical memory.
Donation and handover of a portable defibrillator: The Othoni Community received a portable defibrillator donated by fellow islander Nikolaos Katechis (Maniavini). The equipment was handed over to the Commander of the Othoni Observation Post, Lieutenant Colonel Nikolaos Pournaras, so that it would be immediately available to help protect the health of residents and visitors. Community President Spyros Filokalis expressed his warm thanks for this tangible act of care and social responsibility towards the remote island.
Memorial service and wreath-laying: As part of the tribute, a memorial service was held for Othoni sailors who lost their lives while carrying out their duties. The memory of those who perished aboard the submarine Proteus Y-3, which was sunk by the Italian Navy in 1940, was also honoured, keeping the island's historical legacy alive.
