Lifeguard protection at busy beaches
CORFU. Lifeguards are already in place and will be on duty at the beaches every day until 30 September, including Sundays and public holidays, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands has established a comprehensive, professional lifeguard service, ensuring that its busiest beaches are now safer for swimmers. The Municipality has secured full lifeguard coverage at these beaches, fully complying with all legal requirements for the protection of human life at sea.
It should be noted that a beach is classified as "busy" if it attracts an average of at least 300 bathers per kilometre of coastline per day during peak periods. In accordance with these provisions, the Municipality consistently ensures that the safety needs of these designated beaches are fully met.
Lifeguard teams have already been deployed and will remain on duty until 30 September, operating daily, including Sundays and public holidays, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the following popular beaches:
- Agios Gordios
- Kontogialos
- Glyfada
- Paleokastritsa
- Barbati
- Ipsos
- Dassia
These beaches are equipped with 17 fully staffed lifeguard towers, operated by 34 certified and professionally trained lifeguards, who are prepared to provide first aid using the necessary medical equipment.
Motorised and Marine Equipment
To protect swimmers from passing vessels, the designated bathing areas have been fully marked and clearly demarcated.
In addition, to ensure a rapid and effective response to emergencies, the contracted service provider operates a fully equipped fleet of rescue craft consisting of:
- Five 5-metre rescue boats for the overall supervision of the Municipality's coastal area of responsibility.
- Seventeen small rescue speedboats, assigned to provide immediate response capability for each lifeguard tower.
- Six rescue jet skis, as required by legislation for beaches where enhanced lifeguard coverage is mandated (i.e. beaches requiring more than one lifeguard).
