CORFU. The hike will take place on Sunday, 25 January, following a 7km route around the Antinioti Lagoon.

The Ionian University Gym, continuing its collaboration with the Municipality of North Corfu and the Civil Protection Department of the Municipality of North Corfu, and within the framework of the environmental awareness initiatives of the ZOE programme, is organising a guided tour at the Antinioti Lagoon, one of Corfu’s most important ecosystems and a protected area of the Natura 2000 network.

The hike, rescheduled for Sunday, 25 January, will follow a 7 km route around the Antinioti Lagoon, offering participants direct contact with the area’s unique natural beauty, along a mixed terrain of dirt tracks and paved roads.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore the dunes and coastal formations that shape the lagoon’s landscape, the unique wetland that hosts rare species of flora and fauna—such as the European otter (Lutra lutra) and the legless lizard (Ophisaurus apodus)—as well as the historic Monastery of Agia Ekaterini, which overlooks the lagoon.

For comfort and safety, participants are advised to bring: sports shoes, long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, and water.

Interested students may register during the programme’s exercise days and hours with the Physical Education instructors Fotini Kokkinidou, Giorgos Notaropoulos, and Kostas Papaioannou. Registration is also available at the University Gym office, by prior arrangement with the hike coordinator Angeliki Mavropoulou (contact number: 695 201 2574).

Due to limited availability, places will be allocated strictly on a first-come, first-served basis.

Note: Transportation will be provided by bus. The total cost for both routes is €6 per person for students (special rate) and €7 per person for academic and administrative staff.
