International ranking of Ionian University

The international evaluation of universities places the Ionian University at 1,637th position among roughly 32,000 higher education institutions worldwide. On the national level, it ranks 22nd out of 24. According to the platform webometrics.org, the Ionian University was ranked 1,637th globally, an improvement from 2,090 in 2024 and 2,310 in 2023.

“The impressions created by a simple ranking number don’t necessarily make us wiser,” said Dean Andreas Floros. Speaking to Enimerosi, he notes the methodological details behind such results, as published by the ranking. Quantifying performance, he adds, is not always the most accurate indicator. At the Ionian, for instance, one-third of the teaching staff are artists, who favour concerts and exhibitions over publications, and these activities are not formally counted. He also points to the low ranking of Panteion University in Athens as an example, due both to its small size and to the humanities orientation of its programmes.

The Ionian University remains small, island-based, and located in a tourist region — a reality that comes with its own challenges.

A top priority, according to Mr. Floros, continues to be addressing the housing needs of faculty and students, which he expects will be tackled with private-sector support, alongside the promised assistance of the Ministry. “Soon we’ll be able to present a way for people to live here without spending too much,” he said.

As for rumours about the closure of departments, the dean firmly denied them, noting instead that the renaming of the Department of Archives, Library Science and Museology to the Department of Information Science has just been published in the Government Gazette. The renaming, which does not alter the department’s scientific scope, will take effect in the 2026–2027 academic year.
