In the context of protecting and promoting citizens’ health, following the fire that broke out on October 17, 2025, at the frozen food processing, packaging, and standardisation facility owned by “Goggakis S.A. Commercial and Industrial Company,” located in the Alepou area of the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, the Directorate of Public Health & Social Welfare of the General Directorate of Public Health & Social Welfare of the Regional Unit of Corfu was present at the site from the very first moment with an inspection team.
A macroscopic assessment was carried out, an on-site inspection report was drawn up and sent to all competent authorities, and instructions were given to the company in order to safeguard Public Health.
The Directorate of Public Health & Social Welfare of the Regional Unit of Corfu sent to all competent services and authorities measures to be implemented for insect control, rodent control, and disinfection both within the facility and in the wider area.
At the same time, it is deemed necessary to systematically monitor the situation in the neighbouring community so that any potential problems, such as an increase in the rodent population or possible sources of contamination, can be identified in time.
Likewise, the laboratory sampling tests of drinking water quality at critical points of the water supply network are being carried out systematically. The results of the laboratory tests conducted so far were found to be “NORMAL.” Laboratory testing continues.
The online message from the Ministry of Health, dated November 6, 2025, informs us as follows:
Residents of the area should maintain cleanliness of outdoor spaces, ensure protection against insects and rodents, and manage waste safely.
Regular and thorough refuse collection, combined with securely closed containers, is recommended to prevent the attraction of rodents and the creation of favourable conditions for their proliferation.
Regarding the odour that continues to be observed in the area, “although odours may cause discomfort such as nausea, headache, or mild irritation, serious health effects are not expected in outdoor areas.”
It is recommended to keep windows closed temporarily during periods of strong odour and to avoid staying in areas where it is more intense.
If symptoms such as breathing difficulties, persistent headache, or severe nausea persist, medical advice should be sought.
Infrastructure should be created or improved so as to eliminate, as far as possible, any flooding, overflow, or uncontrolled discharge of sewage or waste in areas frequented by people.
Additionally, we inform you that the Directorate of Public Health & Social Welfare of the Regional Unit of Corfu is continuing to carry out regular health inspections of the operation of potable water distribution systems in homes near the aforementioned company and in businesses in the wider area.
The above actions and monitoring procedures will continue until the full restoration of the area and the elimination of any risk to Public Health.
