Dead striped dolphins washed up on Acharavi beach
CORFU. Spyridoula Kokkali: Marine life alert.
Residents of Almyros, Acharavi were confronted with two dead striped dolphins on Thursday morning, washed ashore on the beach, while a third dolphin was helped back into the sea. Corfu Port Authority and the Municipality of North Corfu were notified of the incident. Deputy Mayor of Circular Economy and Environment, Spyridoula Kokkali, who was present at the scene, posted the following on Facebook:
On Thursday morning, October 24, on the Acharavi-Almyros beach, we encountered a troubling situation as two striped dolphins were found washed ashore, while another was observed swimming nearby.
As the Deputy Mayor of Circular Economy and Environment, I strongly believe that we must highlight the importance of marine ecosystems for the health of the environment and the economic well-being of our area.
Marine life, including dolphins, plays a crucial role in the balance of marine ecosystems, affecting biodiversity and ecological stability. The health of marine ecosystems is directly linked to the sustainability of fishing, tourism and other sectors dependent on the sea.
The presence or absence of marine species can provide us with valuable information regarding the condition of marine ecosystems and human impact. Unfortunately, factors such as pollution, climate change, and overfishing threaten these ecosystems, making the need for action urgent.
It is our duty to ensure the protection of these living organisms and their habitats. I urge all of us to take collective responsibility for the protection of marine life. If you encounter any marine animal in need, please contact the appropriate authorities or the North Corfu Municipal Civil Protection Service, so we can intervene promptly.
Let us work together to preserve our rich marine heritage and secure a sustainable future for the next generations."
