CORFU. On the occasion of World Restart A Heart Day.

On the occasion of "World Restart a Heart Day," the Ambulance Service (EKAB) is organising a series of events across the country with the aim of informing, educating and raising awareness about the crucial importance of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for supporting cardiac function and the survival of cardiac arrest victims.

During the session on Evgenios Voulgareos Pedestrian Street, the paramedics informed the public about CPR and the use of defibrillators.

"European Restart a Heart Day" was established by a declaration of the European Parliament in 2012 and takes place on October 16th every year. Its goal is to improve the survival rate of patients who experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest by enhancing public awareness and education in victim resuscitation and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

Low survival rate

Cardiac arrest is one of the most common causes of death in Europe, with approximately 400,000 victims each year. Cardiac arrests can occur anywhere, on the road, at work, during sports, or during other intense activities, but the majority happen at home. The survival rate after a cardiac arrest remains low, with only one in ten patients who have suffered a cardiac arrest having a chance of survival.

In the critical minutes that elapse before the arrival of specialised assistance, the application of CPR by bystanders increases the chances of the victim's survival.

For this reason, it is important to inform and educate people about cardiac arrest and CPR, a relatively simple procedure that can help a victim of cardiac arrest survive.
