CORFU. The studies have been delivered and the necessary steps are now being taken for the projects to be put out to tender and be implemented.

The Ionian Islands Regional Authorities' studies worth €200,000 for the construction of three roundabouts in Central Corfu in particularly important places for road traffic and safety have been completed.

As reported by Enimerosi on 19 March 2022, the roundabouts will be created at the junction of central roads, two of which are located on the Eth. Corfu-Paleokastritsa Rd in Sotiriotissa and Ekati and the third is on the Eth. Corfu-Lefkimmi Rd in Tria Gefiria.

In July 2020 the studies were included in a funding tool. In March 2022 they were put out to tender and finally in February 2023 they were contracted. The studies were delivered and now the necessary actions for the project to be put out to tender and be implemented are moving forward.

Locations

The locations planned for the roundabouts are at the most problematic spots on the road network, which are congested daily and often the scene of accidents.

The junction at Tria Gefiria has four roads - from the north, the airport, Eth. Lefkimmis and Eth. Pelekas - and is the cause of serious delays on one of the main roads to the south.

The junction at Ekati, leading to Corfu Town, the port and the airport, always has long lines of traffic, especially at peak hours. The frequent problems with the traffic lights also lead to many accidents.

The third 'hot spot' is the junction at Sotiriotissa near Paramythoupoli. At the moment, metal road barriers have been placed, forcing residents and thousands of visitors at Nisi Gerekou (where the five-star Kontokali Bay hotel is located) to drive a long way to make a U-turn.
