CORFU. The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food has issued a circular.

A circular was issued by the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food via the Directorate of Veterinary Services and Animal Protection, with the subject "Protection of working equines and animals involved in transportion during summer holidays under extreme weather conditions."

Specifically, in the circular sent to all Veterinary Directorates and port authorities in the country in view of the extreme weather conditions expected to prevail in during the heatwave "Kleon," the following are stressed:

On days when temperatures range from 35°C to 39°C in the shade, working animals will not work during hours of high thermal load, particularly between 12:00 and 17:00.

On days of extreme heat with temperatures above 39°C, the work of animals is prohibited throughout the day.

Furthermore, it is required that these animals have free access to natural shade or shelter and free access to water throughout the day.

Regarding the movement of animals, it must happen with full protection under extreme weather conditions. When temperatures in the garages of passenger and cargo ships exceed 35°C, the transportation of animals without air conditioning is not permitted.

In a related statement, Minister of Agricultural Development and Food, Lefteris Avgenakis, stated:

"The prevalence of extreme weather phenomena during the heatwave necessitates care to adhere to protection rules and to monitor the health and well-being conditions of animals. Ensuring animal welfare is our primary concern."
