CORFU. The solution of placing prefab toilets in San Rocco Square is being considered by the Central Corfu Municipality. The ones in Upper Square, in Bosketo and at the open-air market are already open to the public.
Maintenance work is underway on the public toilets in Mantouki, which have been closed to the public for years. The ones in San Rocco Square are in a state of neglect, with the Central Corfu Municipality considering to place prefab toilets in order to better serve citizens and visitors passing through there.
As the Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros told Enimerosi, every year the Municipality carries out maintenance work on the public toilets. Works have already begun in Mantouki, so that the toilets located next to the basketball court can finally be available for use within the year.
Maintenance work is expected to follow in the toilets at the open-air market, which are already open to the public, as well as the toilets in the Upper Square and Bosketo (Karvouniaris), which are fully operational daily from early in the morning until sunset.
As for the public toilets at the Garitsa-Anemomylos Park, according to Mr. Kalogeros, works for their complete reconstruction, as part of the regeneration project, have been completed by 80%.
Need for more
However, since Corfu Town is one of the most visited tourist areas, it is considered necessary to improve the existing infrastructure by adding more public prefab toilets within the historic centre (OLKE has placed some similar ones at the exit of the parking area in the old port opposite the Naval Base), as the Deputy Mayor for Cleaning Services Yiannis Seremetis told Enimerosi. As he mentioned, an area that could be improved with prefab toilets is, for example, Campiello.
"More public toilets are needed in the Corfu Old Town, due to the increased tourism on the island. But they should be supervised. The Municipality, however, does not have the staff to take care of them. That is why at the Municipal Council meeting we had proposed to have a contractor to supervise them," he said.
As for the public toilets in San Rocco Square, which look like a small landfill from the accumulated rubbish on the steps and around the area, he explained that this is a difficult case because of the problem created in the drainage during the geological survey for the construction of the famous underground parking area.
"We are looking at placing prefab toilets in San Rocco Square to serve people. It's something we are considering. However, although the Cleaning Services are always cleaning the rubbish from the public toilets there, people go and throw new ones. There needs to be supervision in San Rocco," said Mr. Seremetis.
Toilets at Mon Repos
Regarding the progress of the work on the repair and maintenance of the toilets at the Mon Repos estate, Mr. Kalogeros explained that the contractor's problem was overcome through a court settlement. According to him, the project is almost finished and what remains is the landscaping of the surrounding area, painting and the installation of a door in the toilet for people with special needs.
"The contractor has not stopped the work but will continue the project in cooperation with the Municipality. Any other announcement is misinformation," commented Mr. Kalogeros.
The Central Corfu Municipal Council was to decide at its meeting on Monday on whether the 7th extension to the deadline of the project will be granted or not. However, due to not everyone being present, the Council was called on Tuesday to an emergency meeting.
