CORFU. Order given to vacate former Mantouki slaughterhouse, which is being converted into cultural centre.
Corfu Local Auhtority Employees Union is complaining that the municipal services housed in the former slaughterhouse building in Mantouki are being "thrown onto the street". It says that the move was made in a disorderly manner and they were sent to locations unsuitable to work in and store equipment such as Mon Repos, Alykes Potamos and DEYAK and is asking for the appropriate actions to be taken for the relocation of services and for the Safety Technician, Workplace Doctor and SEPE to visit the aforementioned locations.
Union statement:
After being in power for three years we expected the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality to have taken some steps to better organise the municipal services. On several occasions we reported the deficiencies and awful state of the municipal facilities, the lack of sanitary facilities required by law and the unused funds.
Instead, we recently saw the services housed in the former slaughterhouse in Mantouki being literally thrown out onto the street. The order was given to vacate the building, which is being converted into cultural centre. Not only were the proper measures not taken, but there wasn't even the minimum organisation with the move being made in a disorderly manner and to the following completely unsuitable locations:
Mon Repos
The streetlighting department (approx. 16 employees, equipment, tools, electrical materials) was relocated to the lobby outside the Municipal Council meeting room at Mon Repos and the three bucket trucks and three other vehicles are parked outside.
Alykes
The Cleaning Services were relocated to the ground floor of an unrented property (approximately 20 sq.m.) in a building complex in Alykes Potamos.
Approximately 80 employees, desks, protective clothing, equipment and cleaning materials have been housed in an almost non-existent space which is completely unsuitable and without sanitary facilities. The small refuse trucks and other lorries are parked behind the building in a restricted and exposed space.
DEYAK
The municipal store, which provides all the services with equipment and supplies, has been relocated to the DEYAK building in a disorganised way and without the proper infrastructure and with no toilets - employees have to use the toilets in Corfu Town Health Centre!
Yet again, we are forced to lodge a complaint about the local authority for lack of planning, disregard for our colleagues and the diminishment of municipal services.
Yet again, the local authority is making clear to us its intention to privatise the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipal services at a cost which will soon have to be paid by the citizens.
We expect the appropriate actions to be taken immediately regarding the relocation of services and call on the Safety Technician, Workplace Doctor and SEPE to visit the aforementioned locations.
