CORFU. The employees were sworn in at the Town Hall yesterday.

The swearing-in ceremony of 20 employees of the "Help at Home" programme as permanent municipal staff was held yesterday in the presence of the Mayor of Central Corfu and the Diapontia Islands, Meropi Ydraiou.

This puts an end to the job insecurity of people who have been working for over 10 years on successive contracts, supporting elderly and disabled fellow citizens.

To achieve this, a relevant legislative regulation was required, which establishes the permanent status of all employees of the "Help at Home" programme in the Municipalities. The relevant regulation was achieved after a demand by the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE), which had been proposed by Mayor Meropi Ydraiou.

In the Municipality of Central Corfu, all employees in this programme were appointed as permanent staff.

In a statement, Meropi Ydraiou said: "The obvious solution was provided for a problem that had been troubling not only these people but also the municipalities for years. Our municipality was the first to complete the relevant process.

We need social care and solidarity structures. There are people who need continuous support, individuals with mobility problems and the elderly. The employees in the programme cover these fixed and ongoing needs.

Our municipality will further strengthen its social structures in the new four-year period with new and innovative services, supporting those in need."
