In order to facilitate parking, mainly for visitors, temporary parking areas will be used in collaboration with Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality and Corfu Port Authority.
Drivers coming from South Corfu via Eth. Lefkimmis Rd can park at the National Sports Centre and near Garitsa Cemetery. It is estimated that there is space there for about 350 vehicles. From there, visitors can go to town either on foot or using the free shuttle bus to the Douglas Column.
Those coming from Central Corfu via Eth. Pelekas Rd and North Corfu via Eth. Paleokastritsa Rd can park at the New Port, where it is estimated that approximately 2,000 vehicles can be accommodated. From there, visitors can go to town either on foot or using the free shuttle bus.
Driving in Corfu Town on Good Friday will be difficult as the Epitaphio processions begin at 12:30 at various locations and there will be special traffic measures.
The Traffic Police Chief stated the following: "Those living in or near the town centre should move on foot and only use their vehicles if it is absolutely necessary. It is also important that all those coming into town should use the abovementioned parking areas, especially the New Port, which has the greatest capacity, and not to try and find space to park elsewhere as there will be nothing available."
He also pointed out that "signs and barriers will be placed at several locations in town forbidding parking. These locations have been chosen very carefully as parking there can cause problems and block the buses. It is important that everyone observes these restrictions".
BUSES
With regard to visitors on tourist coaches, the latter coming from South Corfu can come as far as the Douglas Column and drop passengers off there. They can then park at Anemomylos. When passengers are returning, they will have to go on foot to the area where the coaches are parked.
Coaches coming from North Corfu will drop off their passengers at the New Port and park there.
The 9-seater vehicles can drop passengers off in Methodiou St. and then go and park at the New Port.
ROAD SAFETY
The Traffic Police Chief stressed the important issue of road safety: "Undoubtedly, driving in town during these days will be difficult, but we should not forget that it is necessary to do it safely.
Thus, we must not forget that alcohol and driving do not go together. We must drive in accordance with the traffic conditions and existing signs. We must respect and give priority to pedestrians. We must wear a seat belt and helmet and do not use a mobile phone while driving.
All traffic police personnel will be on the road 24/7 carrying out checks to avoid dangerous driving behaviour.
Let us all try to avoid road accidents during these days.
And let's not forget that road safety is everyone's business".
