The Ministry of Culture approved and secured funding of €60,000 for restoration studies.
CORFU (Stefanos Gikas). Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas visited today the Venetian Fountain in Kobitsi, along with the Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Kostas Zorbas, the Local Council President Christos Zachos and archaeologists of the Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities.
After the MP was informed about the problems of the monument, he announced that the Ministry of Culture approved and secured funding of €60,000 for studies for its restoration. The contract with the person that will prepare the study will be signed in the coming days so that the preparation can begin, while next week the site will be cleaned of reeds and debris.
Statement from Stefanos Gikas:
"I would like to express my satisfaction, as the Ministry of Culture approved the funding of architectural, static and geotechnical studies for the repair and restoration of the Venetian Fountain in Kobitsi. In the next few days, it is expected that the study will be contracted out by the Ministry of Culture's Directorate for the Restoration of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments, which is expected to be completed in 3 months.
Efforts will then be made to include the integrated study either in the Ionian Islands Region's ESPA 2021-2027 programme or in a restoration programme by the Ministry of Culture, in order to carry out the restoration works.
I would like to thank the Director of the Corfu Antiquities Inspectorate Diamanto Rigakou and of course the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni, who approved the funding of studies with resources of the Ministry, recognising the importance of this monument of special architectural beauty."
