Inauguration of North Corfu΄s firefighting boat

CORFU. The vessel was named "Ektoras Yialopsos - Imia 1996" in memory of the Corfiot Captain of the Navy who died heroically during the Imia crisis.
The inauguration ceremony for North Corfu Municipality's firefighting boat took place today at the Imerolias Harbour in Kassiopi. Following the ceremony, a firefighting training exercise was held.
The vessel was named "Ektoras Yialopsos - Imia 1996" in memory of the Corfiot Captain of the Navy who died heroically during the Imia crisis together with Christodoulos Karathanasis and Panayiotis Vlachakos. The three navy officers lost their lives when their helicopter fell in the sea.
The three Greek navy officers lost their lives when the helicopter they were in crashed into the sea.
It is worth noting that the vessel has been used for several months by the North Corfu Municipality, while one of the operators is the Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris.
The crew includes Nikos Poulis (doctor), Giorgos Mavropoulos (firefighter and crew chief) and Vassilis Mouzakitis (general duties).
The new Municipal vessel will increase the readiness of the Civil Protection Service in collaboration with the other services (Fire, Police, Coastguard etc.) to provide immediate assistance to boats and bathers; will take part in search and rescue operations; fight coastal fires and fires on boats; support land firefighters and assist the Municipality with pollution and waste along the coast.
