The National Resistance Anniversary was honoured in Corfu today with events organised by the Ionian Islands Regional Administration.
Nektarios, Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontia Islands led a service at the Spiliotissa Metropolitan Church this morning with a formal reading from the principal of Corfu 4th Junior High and Ionian University Professor of History Elena Vousolinou-Anifanti.
There was then a memorial service at the National Resistance monument with wreaths being laid at the sculpture by Giorgos Megoulas followed by a minute's silence in remembrance of the glorious dead.
The National Day to celebrate the National Resistance was established by Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou in 1982 and is celebrated every year on 25 November (the day that the Gorgopotamos bridge was blown up in 1942) to honour the Greeks' resistance to the occupying powers - Germans, Italians and Bulgarians - during the period 1941-42.
