CORFU. Corfu took part in the 1st International ICC Conference and Mayors Forum: Towards a green, digital and resilient economy.
As a member of the European Commission "100 Intelligent Cities Challenge - ICC" Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality took part in the 1st International "ICC Conference and Mayors Forum: Towards a green, digital and resilient economy" in Barcelona as part of the Smart City Expo World Congress.
Central Corfu Municipality press release:
"Our municipality received positive and complimentary comments regarding the progress made in such a short time in areas such as waste management and the circular economy, online services for citizens, digital governance and energy transition.
This European Commission programme will be extended for another 30 months and it is almost certain that Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality will participate in the new programme due to its high performance and the actions it implemented as a participant.
Actions implemented by the Municipality as part of the ICC programme, which drew positive comments, include the following:
- The Activation of an online platform for queries and requests from citizens and the ability for members of the public to become involved in improvements. In its two years of operation the municipality has dealt with over 11,000 online queries and requests.
- The use of electronic signatures to avoid bureaucracy and speed up procedures for citizens.
- The establishment of eight separate streams of waste collection (batteries, electrical appliances, light bulbs, ink cartridges and toner, cigarette stubs, unexpired medicines, sea waste, clothing etc.) which are sent to be processed separately and not to the landfill. The municipality also plans by the end of 2023 to set up for the first time a network for separate collection and new streams such as cooking and olive oil, plastic/metal, paper and organic waste.
- The complete decarbonisation of the electrical systems on Erikoussa and Othoni islands and a 'smart marina' on Mathraki based on a technical and financial study "Transition to just and clean energy in the Diapontia Islands".
Deputy Mayor Ms. Tzanne said: "I feel proud that the European Commission and all those who took part in the programme recognise the progress made by Corfu up to now and made positive comments regarding the actions implemented by our municipality. Central Corfu Municipality has already begun to transform - as promised by Meropi Ydraiou - into a 'green' and 'smart' municipality serving its citizens directly, quickly and efficiently whilst offering new services which have a positive effect on people's everyday lives. It is truly excellent that the European Commission aims to once more give us the opportunity to take part in this programme."
