CORFU. The appeals of South Corfu Fire Department for suitable facilities have been fruitless.
The Fire Department has informed the South Corfu Fire Service that it has decided to suspend operations at Argyrades Fire Station in South Corfu.
The building was completely unsuitable and for years firefighters had been requesting that the station be moved elsewhere. The Fire Department had discussed the matter with the South Corfu Mayor on several occasions but a new building was never found.
Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas visited the station in September 2020 and agreed that it should be moved due to the poor condition of the building.
According to information available, the unsuitability of the building was confirmed following an inspection by the Planning Department and the Fire Department issued an urgent order that operations be suspended until further notice. Personnel and equipment will be transferred to the 1st Fire Station.
Fire service patrol vehicles will patrol the South Corfu area on a 24-hour basis.
