CORFU. Mayor Meropi Ydraiou: "The biggest project ever carried out in Corfu with a €146 million budget. It is a definitive and permanent solution to the water supply problem.
"The tender process for the biggest project ever carried out in Corfu in recent years, with a €146 million budget, finally begins. It is a project that will provide a permanent solution to the water supply problem and ensure that Corfu will have plenty of high quality water," stated the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou.
The project includes:
- The construction of Melissoudi, Kyprianades and Kalamiotissa dams.
- 210km water supply networks.
- 4 new tanks: Horoepiskopi, Troumpeta, Stroggili, Melitiei.
- Water purification facilities and remote control of the networks.
With the construction of the dams, we are exploiting the water resources and the rainwater that currently ends up in the sea, while 75 old drillings, whose water is not of good quality, will be abolished.
"This project provides a permanent, definitive and sustainable solution to the water supply problem throughout the island. Never before has such a major project been carried out in Corfu. It proves that when we claim something together and in a credible way, we can win important projects and actions for our island and our people.
From my first meeting at the Ministry of Infrastructure in 2020, we have now reached this very positive development with the start of the tender procedures for this huge project.
I do not need to point out how important it is for a tourist destination to have solved, in the best way possible, the problem of water sufficiency and quality. This project belongs to everyone and especially to Corfu citizens."
