CORFU. The visit of the deputy minister to Corfu is much-awaited and there are several who say that matters will be clarified when she comes.
There is a mood of concern at the Health Ministry regarding the director at Cprfu Hospital although nothing is being said officially by those close to the Minister and local politicians have told the media that they don't know anything about the Minister's visit.
Similarly, information that has come to light over the last few days that there was a special meeting in Athens regarding the removal of Corfu Hospital Director has not been confirmed by the office of the Deputy Health Minister Mina Gaga.
Colleagues of the Deputy Minister told Enimerosi that all the meetings were about the Bill for secondary healthcare and there were no meetings about Corfu Hospital administration. They stressed that the Deputy Minister had nothing to say about the reports.
The tenure of the Corfu Hospital Director ends at the beginning of the coming year. He told Enimerosi that he had no information about the stories going around.
Will matters be clarified?
Nevertheless, the visit of the Deputy Minister to Corfu is much-awaited and there are several who say that matters will be clarified when she comes.
Mina Gaga's visit to Corfu had originally been planned for the summer but due to recent developments it has been scheduled to coincide with the 28 October anniversary.
The Deputy Minister is coming to Corfu on the 27th and will be accompanied by the 6th Health Region Director Yiannis Karvelis.
Transfers of doctors
It seems that the 'firefighting' actions of the 6th Health Region - sending doctors here from Ioannina - didn't solve matters as the resignations are still continuing. Following the four recent resignations, which have undermined the services the hospital is able to provide, the cardiologist Dr. Kotinas will also be resigning and is completing his final shifts. Sources says that there are more to come...
With regard to the doctors that have been transferred from Ioannina and have already started work at Corfu Hospital, 6th Health Region Director Yiannis Karvelis told Enimerosi that "they will stay in Corfu for as long as is required." However, Epirus Union of Hospital Doctors is unhappy with the situation and says that the transfers are affecting the operation of the hospitals there, creating problems in the shifts and emergency services. The Hellenic Federation of Hospital Doctor Unions has been updated on the situation.
The Epirus SYRIZA MPs will also bring up the matter of the mandatory transfers of Epirus doctors in Parliament and are asking the Health Ministry to stop the 'band aid' solutions and to employ permanent doctors.
