CORFU. The next move from businesses is now being awaited.

The hours allowed for music to be played at catering establishments and other venues in the historic centre of Corfu Town remain as they are - until 23:00. This was the decision taken at the marathon session of the Central Corfu Municipal Council meeting last night with a large number of residents and business owners present, as the 23 votes required to approve the extension were not achieved.

Mayor Meropi Ydraiou put forward the extension recommended by the Quality of Life Committee, for which there were 21 votes in favour. Yiannis Trepeklis proposed an extension until 24:00 on all days, which got 10 votes, and there were 10 votes against the extension. Mr. Karydis abstained from the vote after the Council President  didn't allow his proposal to be put to the vote as it hadn't been sent to the secretariat in time.

As there weren't the required 23 votes in favour, the time limit remains as it is - until 23:00 at catering establishments and other venues in the historic centre of Corfu Town. This is in line with what local residents, who are completely against any extension, have been demanding.

The time limit applies to the historic centre within the Old Wall (Stam.Desylla to Spianada Square). The previous regulation from 2012 applies to the rest of the town - until 02:00 in the summer season.

It is now to be seen what steps business owners will take, which may even include legal action.
