CORFU. Seven voted against the extension, one abstained and one gave a blank vote.

In a meeting at the Municipal Theatre today, Corfu Town local council discussed whether or not an extension should be granted for the time limit on playing music. Nine of the eleven local councillors were present.

The Council President Alekos Alemanos proposed that there should be no extension. This was applauded by those present and then each councillor was asked to express their view as were the Old Town Permanent Residents' Association and the San Giacomo Old Town Association as well as the 'opposition' the Restaurant & Catering Union.

The two Old Town associations are firmly against any extension, whereas the catering professionals are protesting that there has been a dramatic drop in their turnover.

Professionals: Don't lump us all together

"The problem is being created by two specific businesses, which we have reported and asked the police to enforce the law, even if it means closure. But in no way can all the businesses be lumped all together."

The Local Town Council is the first body to give its opinion on the issue, along with the Quality of Life Committee and then followed by the Municipal Council, which will have the final word. The local authority has already said it is in favour of an extension until 00:30, but for this to be implemented there needs to be a majority vote.

Just an opinion

It should be clarified that the decision of the Local Town Council is just an opinion and recommendation. What happened at the meeting, basically, was that the requests from the Restaurant & Catering Union, the Old Town Permanent Residents' Association and the San Giacomo Old Town Association were heard and the local council gave its opinion on the matter.
