CORFU. The Trade Department’s proposal regarding the times that music can be played was submitted to the Local Council this morning.

The proposal submitted this morning by the Central Corfu Trade Department to the Local Council is expected to solve the issue of the deadline on music in nighttime entertainment venues in historic town centre.

According to the responsible municipal councillor Spyros Moraitis, the proposal concerns an extension of an hour and a half, which is very much in line with the request of businesspeople. The extension from 23:00 to 00:30 from Monday to Sunday, from May to September, is considered a good solution that will satisfy both those who live and those who work in the historic town centre.

The procedure

With this proposal, the Trade Department is requesting a recommendation from the Local Council, which will be examined by the Quality of Life Committee and finally by the Municipal Council, in order for the latter's decision taken in 2012 to be revoked or amended.

“Our proposal has been completed and the final decision will become a law of Central Corfu's local constitution. The decision taken by the Town Council will only apply to the historic town centre from May to September and not during the winter period, when music will be allowed until 23:00,” Mr. Moraitis told Enimerosi.

The local residents

Residents, however, do not change their minds about allowing music until 23:00. They say that the disturbance caused by the music is intolerable and any extension would cause them problems. On the contrary, during the period when hours allowed are being adhered to, they have found their peace.

The businesspeople

However, given that tourism on the island, after two years with pandemic and strict restrictions, has almost returned to the same levels as 2019, businesspeople are demanding for the times at which music can be played to be extended so that their businesses are not destroyed. Thus, they have already submitted their proposal to the Central Corfu Municipality (Sunday to Thursday until 00:30 and Friday, Saturday and holidays until 01:30), which seems to have taken it seriously into account when creating the proposal to submit for approval.

It is worth noting that the decision to be taken by the Town Council will only be binding on the present municipal authority. The next one will be free to follow its own policy on the matter.
