CORFU. The municipal building of the former Ano Korakiana Primary School will be used by the Ionian University Music and Audiovisual Arts Departments.
With the Ionian University housing problem being at the forefront, a positive development occurred as a result of the collaboration between the Central Corfu Municipality and the University.
In particular, by decision of the Municipal Council, the building of the former Ano Korakiana Primary School will be given for 30 years to the Ionian University for free, so that some of the courses of the Music and Audiovisual Arts Departments can take place there.
The municipal property
It is a two-floor building of approximately 490 sq.m. on a 700 sq.m. plot of land, while there is also a 625.13 sq.m. plot of land next to it. The property of the former Primary School will be used exclusively for courses of the University, while in the plot there will be a free parking area.
Mayor Meropi Ydraiou and the Dean Andreas Floros signed this morning the contract for the concession of the municipal property.
"This was something that both the Ano Korakiana residents and the local government wanted for a long time so that the old primary school could find a use that would be in line with the history and tradition of the village and a use that will give vitality and energy to this village, giving it even more value than it already has", said Mrs. Ydraiou noting that more such collaborations will be announced in the future.
The Dean
According to the Ionian University Dean, the municipal property will be used by Music and Audiovisual Arts Departments. “Some of the courses of these Departments will be transferred there, so that the University can have a continuous presence and give life to the building, which will be renovated according to its needs and the specifications set,” he said, noting that following the necessary works, the building will be available for use at the end of the next academic year.
Regarding the students' transportation, except from the bus, a small van is also expected to be available to serve the University's general needs for transportation.
The initiative
The Vice Rector for Administrative Affairs and Planning Efstathios Makris said that this was doctor Savvanis’ idea. “The vision that led to this positive development belongs to our famous doctor Savvanis. The idea and the initiative started from him,” said Mr. Makris.
