CORFU. Performance of opera "The Idea" by Gustav Holst.
Corfu Music School pupils and teachers worked together to put on Gustav Holst's comic opera "The Idea" at the Municipal Theatre on Wednesday 11 May.
The opera was probably written in 1896, when the composer was just 22 years old, and through its humour and innocent story aims to get across a deep social message of equality, respect and balance.
Ionian University Music Department students Akis Kalmoukis and Alkinoos Papayianellis took part in the performance along with the following pupils from Corfu Music School: Maria Monopoli, Haris Capodistrias, Iphigenia Daskalopoulou, Semeli Tsoukala, Katerina Lazaridisoglou, Cassandra Efthymiadou, Alexandros Vassilakis and Dimitris Lappas.
They were accompanied by the Choir - conducted by Dimitra Kalogeropoulou, with Marilena Eloul on piano - and the Music School Orchestra, conducted by Dimitris Papikinou.
The translation was by Suzie Hirdari, with the performance coordinated by Maria Ralli, Angela Skourti and Marina Rapti and the costumes and set designed by Panayiota Kapela - all teachers at the Music School.
School Principal Alexandra Tzouma gave an address as did Central Corfu Mayor Meropi Ydraiou.
