The Broadway musical "The Sound of Music" (1959) is based on the memoir (1949) of Mary von Trapp. The music has been written by Richard Rogers and the lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein.
Hollywood's film "The Sound of Music" (1965), as well as two German films, "The Trapp family" (1956) and "The Trapp family in America" (1958), were based on the book. Maria von Trapp helped with the script of the films. The real von Trapp family left Austria when it was under the Nazi occupation in 1938 and went to the United States, where they made many musical appearances.
