ATHENS. The Prime Minister said the country wants to have a clear picture of the existence of possible natural gas deposits by 2023.

The Prime Minister announced that hydrocarbon explorations will begin immediately in six Greek areas, five of which are marine ones, in order to find natural gas.

“We announce that the explorations for the extraction of natural gas will be accelerated as, based on preliminary studies, our country is likely to have significant quantities of it, both on the mainland and in sea areas,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said during the meeting he had this morning at the Hellenic Hydrocarbon Resources Management company.

Cautiously optimistic

"I am very happy that we are able to make a fresh start in this process. And I want to repeat once again that when we talk about explorations in the field of natural gas, i.e. hydrocarbons, one can never be sure of the outcome. We have indications that make us cautiously optimistic. But as a country we ought to know with certainty whether there are exploitable hydrocarbon deposits," added Mr. Mitsotakis.

The 6 regions

The explorations will be carried out in six regions.

"One is in mainland Greece, in the Epirus Region, in a place where there will be maximum environmental protection. The other five are in marine areas - in the Ionian Sea, in the Gulf of Kyparissia and in Crete," said Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The regions are the following:

1. Northwest of Corfu
2. Ionian Sea
3. Gulf of Kyparissia
4. West of Crete
5. Southwest of Crete
6. Ioannina

Mr. Mitsotakis said that the country wants to have a clear picture of the existence of possible natural gas deposits by 2023 and added that there are indications of possible deposits, which make the government optimistic.

“If we do have significant gas deposits, we will replace imports with our own national wealth,” he said during the meeting.
