CORFU. The Mayor signed the contract for the project today.

The Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou signed today the contract for the ‘Energy Upgrade of Corfu Municipal School Buildings’ project, which concerns five big schools of our town, with the contractor of the project. The project will radically change the schools' image, as extensive works related to energy saving and the provision of quality operating conditions for the school community are expected to be made.

The works will be carried out in Corfu 1st, 2nd and 3rd High Schools, as well as in Corfu 7th and 6th Primary Schools. Once the works are completed, it is expected that the external appearance of the buildings and the learning and teaching conditions will have improved to the maximum.

The aim of the project, whose integration budget is €2,325,500, is to reduce the heat losses and cooling loads of these school buildings and, thus, the energy consumption, which will be achieved by improving the energy efficiency of the school buildings. The works to be carried out are the following:

-Installation of external thermal insulation on the entire external surface of the buildings.

-Installation of thermal insulation on the roofs and floors of the ground floor areas.

-Replacement of old windows with new ones, which will be made of composite aluminium profiles with thermal break and double glazing and energy efficient glass panes.

-Replacement of lighting with new high efficiency LED lamps.

During today's signing of the contract, Mayor Meropi Ydraiou expressed her satisfaction and thanked the Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros and the officials of the Directorate for completing the contracting procedures and monitoring the implementation of the project.

Addressing the representative of the contracting company, she said she hopes that the work will be carried out smoothly, seamlessly and on schedule so that “the pupils and teachers can have the best possible conditions”.

She added that this project is also extremely important because the need to reduce energy consumption is now more urgent and necessary than ever.

It is worth noting that the project is funded by the Regional Operational Programme ‘Ionian Islands 2014-2020’. It should be completed within 18 months and the work is expected to start immediately and become more intensive during the summer months when schools are closed.
