CORFU. On 31 March 2022, they will sign the extension of their contracts for three months.
The Corfu Hospital cleaners finally managed to remain at work for another three months. The cleaners have been ‘with one foot out the door’ for months, as the Health Ministry expressed its intention to use contract cleaners again.
However, the immediate measures of the pandemic had allowed their contracts to be extended until 31 March, while the hospital administration, with this in mind, had already proceeded with the tender procedures for the contractor. The procedure is currently at the stage of objections and, in the meantime, the Board decided yesterday by majority vote to proceed with a temporary contractor until the objections are resolved.
New legislation
However, in a new legislation, which was submitted on 22 March 2022 and is expected to be voted on today, the Ministry allows public nursing facilities to extend contracts for another three months.
The Hospital Cleaners΄ Union President Eleni Pagrati told Enimerosi that the Union had requested a meeting with the Director, but with no response. “35 people are currently on air, 32 of us even filed an injunction. However, the hospital’s Board decided on Tuesday to sign a contract with a contractor. We even discussed this issue with the MeRa25 Yianis Varoufakis’ Secretary, who promised to submit a question to Parliament.”

According to hospital administration sources, however, since there had been no law allowing the extension of contracts, its ‘hands were tied’ and it was obliged to proceed with the tender in order to ensure that the hospital would not be left without cleaning staff for even one day.
The administration informed this afternoon a representative of the Cleaners' Union that the 3-month extension would finally be granted and told the workers to go on Thursday 31 March 22 to sign the new contract, which will be valid until 30 June 2022.
