CORFU. Widespread concern at the Ministry for Infrastructure about attracting companies to take on flight operations.
Ionian Islands Regional Administration is moving forward with a new four-party planning contract for the remaining Ionian Island waterdromes following the court of auditors' decision to annul the Administration's contract with the Ministry for Development and DEPAN (Greek Towns Development Network) as it found some "circumventions of provisions".
The matter of the waterdromes was discussed at the Ionian Islands Regional Council meeting in Lefkada at the weekend following a query by the leader of the ANASA party Theodoros Galiatsatos, who said that the auditors' decision vindicated ANASA's view and revealed the unfairness of the contract and the open misuse of public money.
New planning contract
The Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure and Technical Works Manolis Orphanoudakis told Enimerosi that the new planning contract to be signed will involve four parties - Ionian Islands Regional Administration, the Ministry for Development, the Ministry for Infrastructure and Zakynthos, Lefkada and Cephaloni-Ithaki Port Authorities.
He added that the roadmap for the completion of the waterdrome network in the Ionian Islands was presented to the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Kostas Karamanlis by Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa and himself in Athens in December. "The Ministry for Infrastructure accepted the proposal for the waterdromes that we presented, calling it excellent work, which could be a model for the whole of Greece," said Mr. Orphanoudakis. He pointed out that the planning contract for the Ionian Islands Waterdromes, which will cover the suppy and installation of equipment, will be drawn up by the Ministry itself.
Concerns
There is, however, widespread concern at the Ministry about attracting companies to take on flight operations and the securing of licences for that purpose. This concern was expressed at a recent meeting in Athens that the Ministry's General Secretary Xifaras had with Regional Council President Nikos Mouzakitis, Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Kostas Zorbas and Mr. Orphanoudakis.
At the moment, the only licensed waterdromes in the Ionian Islands are Corfu, Paxos and Patra and the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure recently certified the licences for the first two, which had been inactive for years.
