CORFU. A distressing number of deaths over the last three months.

There has been a shocking number of Covid deaths over the last three months. Despite the gradual 'easing' of the situation nationwide and locally, a significant number of people in Corfu have lost their lives from Covid or its complications.

At the beginning of December the number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic (February 2020) was 88. Hospital sources have confirmed that today (11/3) the total number is 155. In other words, there have been another 67 deaths in three months - and increase of around 75%.

Hospitalisations

The number of Covid patients hospitalised at Corfu Hospital has stabilised and the data indicates that the pandemic is gradually receding.

Hospital sources say that, on a daily basis, there are 15-16 Covid patients in the Special Infectious Diseases Unit, although serious cases and deaths continue.

Fewer vaccinations

The vaccination rate has decreased significantly, with few appointments being made at the hospital.

According to emvolio.gov.gr, on 10 March there were just 180 vaccinations in the whole of Corfu (Corfu Hospital, Corfu Health Centre, Agios Markos, Agios Athanasios, Lefkimmi, at home).

Corfu Medical Association vice-president Aggelos Spyrou says that around 80% have been vaccinated and according to the data for February collected by Corfu Covid Watch, there are still approximately 3,000 over-65s who are unvaccinated.

In its recent report, the Covid Watch Committee warns that the pandemic recession and the relaxation of measures shouldn't lead to the false sense that the pandemic is completely under control.

"Based on existing scientific knowledge on COVID-19, we do not know how long the current high levels of immunity will last. It is very likely that there will be new outbreaks of the epidemic, and it is possible that there will be new variants of the virus, which will create new waves of the epidemic, as has happened repeatedly in the past."
