CORFU. The Corfu museum is in good company - see some of the other nominees.

The 60 nominees, including Corfu's Capodistrias Museum, for the European Museum of the Year Award were announced a month ago. Last year's winner was the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands.

The judges will have a hard job this year, choosing between Capodistrias, Beethoven, Copernicus, Gaudi and others. These are just a few of the impressive museums vying for the award.

There are four museums from Turkey amongst the nominees, with the 'jewel' perhaps being the Göbeklitepe Archaeological Site, with its exhibits from the world's oldest temple.

Other strong contenders are Nicolaus Copernicus House in Torun, Poland; the Swiss Museum of the Blind; Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, Germany and the Museum of Cosmonautics in Moscow.

Capodistrias Museum is perhaps the only nominee which displays, through the life of Capodistrias, a significant chapter of European political history and the birth of a nation.

We wish the museum good luck!
