CORFU. Collection and management of surface water in order for this valuable resource to be given for irrigation and agriculture.
The inclusion of the Ionian Islands Region’s proposal in the ‘Antonis Tritsis’ programme marks the maturity of the studies of land improvement projects, reservoirs, rainwater tanks and irrigation networks for the Corfu, Cephalonia and Zakynthos Regional Units with a budget of €620,000 (€500,000 + VAT 24%), in order to implement the update of the abovementioned studies per island, which will provide the possibility of water supply to rural and farming areas to meet their needs.
“The Ionian Islands Region, faithful to its commitment to support and recover the primary sector, has planned necessary infrastructure works that will enable the development of agriculture and livestock farming on our islands”, said the Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa.
According to an announcement by the Ionian Islands Region, the collection and management of surface water is of primary importance, because it will provide this valuable resource for irrigation and agriculture and will, thus, help the recovery of the primary sector in our islands. Furthermore, climate change forces us to target water management in order to avoid unpleasant consequences in the future.
In detail, the Ionian Islands Region aims to mature the following projects:
- For the Corfu Region: a) construction of small closed-type prefabricated rainwater tanks (500-2000m²) and landscaping of the surrounding area and b) construction of the dam in Reggini with irrigation networks.
- For the Cephalonia Region: a) construction of small prefabricated closed-type prefabricated rainwater tanks (500-2000m²) and landscaping of the surrounding area, b) construction of an off-stream reservoir with irrigation networks in Lixouri, and c) construction of a reservoir in Katelios and 1030-stremma irrigation networks.
- For the Zakynthos Region: a) construction of small closed-type rainwater tanks (500-2000m²) and landscaping of the surrounding area and b) construction of the reservoir in Fioliti and a 350-stremma irrigation network.
- In addition, the Regional Authority has already launched, in the context of the exploitation of surface water, the construction of rainwater tanks in all the islands, the updating of the study of the reservoir in Grizata in Cephalonia, and the extension and maintenance of the irrigation network in Nymphes in North Corfu. Proposals which, once mature, will be submitted to the respective funding programmes of the Rural Development Programme.
“The Regional Authority, faithful to its promises for the utilisation of surface water in our islands, is implementing its objectives by maturing studies for reservoirs, networks and rainwater tanks, in order to improve, in the best way possible, the primary sector and, at the same time, to face the upcoming crisis of climate change”, said the Deputy Regional Governor for the Ionian Islands Agricultural Economy and Rural Development Sotiris Kouris.
