CORFU. The traditional Blessing of the Water ceremony for Epiphany in Corfu Town.
Following a morning service at the Metropolitan Spilaiotissis Church, there was a small procession to the Old Port for the Blessing of the Water ceremony and diving to retrieve the cross.
A lot of Corfiots watched the ceremony from Mourayia.
Several brave swimmers dived into the ice-cold water in an effort to retrieve the Holy Cross and receive this year's blessing.
The retrieval of the cross thrown into the sea by Archbishop Nektarios wasn't so easy this year and the swimmers had to make several efforts until one of them eventually got hold of it and lifted it triumphantly into the air.
The swimmer who retrieved the cross was Markos Tzioulianos, who expressed his joy and best wishes for everyone. The Archbishop rewarded him with a gold cross and gave silver crosses to all those who took part.
