CORFU. The team won the top award from the Hellenic Thoracic Society for the subject ΄Pleura Diseases΄.

The doctors in Corfu Hospital Pulmonary Department have won the top award from the Hellenic Thoracic Society for the subject ΄Pleura Diseases΄.

Their paper was presented at the 30th Panhellenic Thoracic Conference which took place in Athens, 15-19 December.

The award-winning team comprises the following: Lefteris Markatis, Garyfalia Perlepe, Andreas Afthinos, Konstantinos Pagratis, Haralambos Varsamas, Eleftheria Haini and Ilias Papanikolaou as well as the well-known Professor of Pulmonology at the University of Thessalia and Head of the Pulmonary Clinic at Larissa University Hospital Konstantinos Gourgoulianis.

The Head of Corfu Hospital Pulmonary Clinic Ilias Papanikolaou told Enimerosi, "The clinic deals with all pulmonary diseases in the best interests of the patients - both Covid and chronic pulmonary diseases."

Study observed 500 patients

Lefteris Markatis told Enimerosi that the study they undertook included observation of patients at Corfu and Larissa Hospitals in 2018 and 2019. A total of 500 patients were observed - 400 in Corfu and 100 in Larissa - who had been diagnosed with pleurisy.

The study was judged to be the best on the specific subject and similar studies have only been done in the USA and UK. It is expected that the paper will be published. "A lot of good work is being done in the provinces, even during the pandemic and with insufficient personnel," said Dr. Markatis. "A vison exists."

The award presented to Corfu Hospital pulmonologists comes at an especially difficult time with the hospital under extreme pressure on a daily basis due to the increased number of Covid admissions and the doctors making superhuman efforts to save lives. And yet, despite this pressure, they still manage to continue their research work.
