CORFU. Those living in North or South Corfu will have to bring their children to Corfu Town for the vaccination.

The vaccination of children aged 5-11 began today, Saturday 18 December, in Corfu. The vaccinations for this age-group are only being administered at the Health Centre in Corfu Town for the whole island. Those living in North or South Corfu will have to bring their children into town as it is not planned at the moment to use other health centres.

There were 50 appointments for the first day and vaccinations began early in the morning.

Health Centre director Sophia Mavropoulou told Enimerosi that during the festive season vaccinations will be administered on 18, 20, 22, 27 and 29 December. From the new year, children's vaccinations will be administered every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning.

There has been great demand and the centre is fully booked until 2 February and 250 appointments have been booked up to 29 December.

Lack of personnel

At the moment it is planned to carry out all the children's vaccinations at Corfu Town Health Centre, which has been under extreme pressure due to the serious lack of personnel.

The Health Centre not only administers vaccinations for all age-groups, but also has to provide all health services (vaccinations at home, outpatients, emergencies etc.) with the limited staff available, as previously reported by Enimerosi.

At the moment, Corfu Town Health Centre has three doctors, including the director, and seven nursing staff as the three nurses who were suspended were never replaced and another is on long-term health leave.

It is worth noting that, although Corfu Town Health Centre will be administering children's vaccinations, it does not have its own paediatrician and will be using one from Agios Markos Health Centre PIKPA, according to medical sources.
