CORFU. The Ionian University is planning six foreign language programmes to attract foreign students – From brain drain to brain gain.

The Ionian University is attempting to attract foreign students through the creation of foreign language programmes.

The proposals for the creation of six international and foreign language programmes at the institution are expected to be examined at tomorrow's meeting of the Senate. This programme for the support of internationalisation actions in higher education, which has been included in the ESPA Programme and is co-financed by the European Social Fund, will create undergraduate and postgraduate programmes aimed at foreign students.

Design

Out of a total of €20 million allocated to academic institutions for the design and development of these programmes, an amount of €465,116 is being allocated to the Ionian University. The programme should be implemented until 31 October 2023.

“The funding given to us is not for the running of the programmes but for their design and development. Once the procedures are completed, they will be ready to start running. The funding expires in 2023 and probably in 2024 the programmes can begin,” the Dean of the University Professor Andreas Floros told Enimerosi.

Synergies

The undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to be created at the Ionian University will be run both with synergies with other universities abroad – within and outside the EU – and autonomously by the institution itself. They will be for foreign students who will attend courses in a foreign language, paying tuition fees, the amount of which will be decided by each Department.

It should be clarified that this is the first time that foreign language programmes will be created at the Ionian University, while in the rest of Greece, only two universities have similar programmes – the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. According to Mr. Floros, so far there are developed proposals from six Departments of the University, including the Department of History, the Department of Audio and Visual Arts and the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpretating.

From brain drain to brain gain

The internationalisation of Greek universities aims to create an educational system that is in constant communication and interaction with the educational systems of other countries. As noted in the call for proposals, the development of strategic alliances and the expansion of international educational and research collaborations of Greek universities will ensure better quality of studies, international competitiveness of the studies provided, international recognition of the Greek institution degrees and higher ranking in international league tables.

It will also create highly qualified jobs, it will attract students from other countries and contribute to the improvement of the quality of education provided, while it will also change brain drain to brain gain.

It should also be noted that the action supports the development processes of the programmes rather than their full running, so that a large part of them can become viable in the long term and form the basis for the full development of the internationalisation strategy for higher education.
